From the cover: “Accompanied by a girl and a Cog Joe Ceurvorst left Algiers for the African Desert in a solitary jeep. A novice in the art of motoring, he made his way across the Sahara towards Central Africa as far as the Belgian Congo. He returned by the Nile, Tripolitania and Tunisia. Four deserts and the equatorial jungle at the height of the rainy season!

The jeep was always plunging across rivers or ravines, bouncing up and down escarpments, breaking springs, losing its lights and having other electrical and mechanical trouble — without ever meeting real disaster. The ‘team’ carried no arms, and sometimes slept unscathed in the open or in the jeep in areas full of big game.

The rhythm of the journey is rapid and there is nothing monotonous in the tale, for the whole enterprise was something of a gamble. At each stop the author’s acute sense of observation captures the curious detail. At each meeting he discovers the unusual. He has dedicated the book to those who are tempted to travel in Africa — not only to those who will be lucky enough to make the journey in reality, but also to those who will live it in imagination.”
