From the cover: “In Making a Shrub Garden Mr. and Mrs. Bawden tell of the adventure, joys and trials of garden making from the wild. They relate how they moved hundreds of shrubs from an old garden, and how they endeavoured to blend and harmonize them into the background of a country setting of trees and heathers.

Many people like to move favourite plants and shrubs to a new garden, and in the early chapters helpful advice is given on carrying this out.

The authors’ very full list of shrubs, medium and large, includes a detailed description of each—its individual beauty and shape, its rate of growth and its use in the garden scheme. Feeling that more should be known and greater use made of the host of dwarf shrubs that are now available, they describe many of these, together with rock garden shrublets. The importance and winter colour value of conifers, and the appeal of dwarf and slow growing conifers, are fully emphasized. In addition, there are chapters on heathers, azaleas and rhododendrons, and on labour saving by ground covering and carpeting with shrubs. Altogether the book gives a very comprehensive collection, with much valuable advice on planning and culture, for owners of medium and small gardens.”
