Condition: Good. Boards faded and somewhat marked. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned with occasional spotting, more heavily to the blanks and endpapers.

Undated, and edition not stated but refers to a First Edition of 1929, and estimated that this is around 1937 and the 38th Edition. 1 fold out plus tables within the text. From the preface: “Unlike some cookery books, published by the makers of particular gas-ovens, with recipes and instructions for use with those ovens only, the recipes in the MAIN COOKERY BOOK are primarily intended for general use with gas-ovens.

The first edition was published in 1929, and so great was the demand for it that new editions, revised and enlarged in many instances, have since been necessary at regular intervals. This present edition has been further revised and brought up-to-date, whilst it is so enlarged that the original number of recipes has been nearly doubled.

It still remains a COOKERY BOOK with application to gas-ovens generally, for users of ordinary ovens without thermostatic control will find the time for cooking and the heat required (a ‘slow’, ‘moderately hot’, or ‘hot’ oven, etc.) given with each recipe.

In previous editions much information has been given about various types of gas-ovens then being marketed by R. & A. Main, Ltd. In the present edition this information has been omitted, because with every cooker designed by them since 1937, a ‘User’s Own Book, describing its particular features and manipulation, has been presented to the buyer.”
