This is one man’s view of July 1st 1916, the first day of one of the most massive offensives in the history of modern war. The great struggle over the Somme was to drag on all through the summer of 1916 and was brought to a standstill by the winter weather in November. During these months the number of casualties incurred by both sides reached an incredible 1,300,000.”
