The History of Portland Square. Illustrated with B&W photographs and maps. From the introduction: “Portland Square, situated to the north of Broadmead, Bristol’s main shopping area, is reputed to be the most complete of the city’s eighteenth century squares. Despite this distinction many Bristolians remain unaware of its existence. One reason for this is that the square enjoyed only a relatively short period as a fashionable place of residence before falling into decline. For more that a hundred years and especially after the Second World War, when it suffered extensive bomb damage, Portland Square became derelict and uninviting.”.
