An attempt to describe the life of an infantry battalion in the Western Desert just before, and during, the first night of the Battle of El Alamein. For two and a half years after Dunkirk the British Army was sealed up in England, and the Desert alone was a battleground for Englishmen to eat, sleep, fight and die in. Those who fought in the Western Desert, the “desert rats”, will never forget the vast loneliness and emptiness of their battleground and the pale sky that pressed down on them.
