First in this edition. The island of Krell was one of the Japanese hell-holes of the Pacific War. Men held prisoner there had little prospect of surviving, and for women shipped to the camp from Singapore the prospect was worse. There was little future for any of them, so when the chance came they made their escape, taking advantage of the volcanic tremors that shook the island. They had nowhere to go, but they preferred to die fighting in the jungle, rather than to die at the hands of their sadistic captors.
