The book opens with an expedition to Chile, to climb the Central Tower of Paine, which introduces Chris’s wife, Wendy (who accompanied the party), an expedition on which Bonington teamed up with Don Whillans. Further highlights are accounts of winter climbing in Scotland with Tom Patey, of the first ever tele-climb (in the Cheddar Gorge), of the first direct ascent in winter of the Eiger North Face, of the famous climb on the Old Man of Hoy. The book ends with the summer of 1972, and preparations for the autumn Everest expedition which only just failed to put Englishmen for the first time on top of the world’s highest mountain. Illustrated with B&W photographs.
