From the foreword: “In the summer of 1960, as 17 new nations were coming to birth and entering the United Nations, leaders of Africa and Asia met with men of science at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovoth, Israel. From 40 countries on five continents, some 120 delegates came to the International Conference on Science in the Advancement of New States. Their mission was two-fold: to discuss the problems of new nationhood and to see how the host nation, Israel, was solving these problems.
