The remarkable qualities of this personal story by an officer who fought with great distinction in the Battle of the Atlantic cannot be better described than in the following extract from the Foreword by the official historian of the war at sea: 'I know of no other officer, let alone one of the Royal Naval Volunteer Re- serve, who served continuously for more than five years in command of escort vessels; nor of any other who graduated from a trawler at the very beginning, to a corvette, then to a small destroyer, to corvette, then to a small destroyer, to several larger destroyers or groups of destroyers, and finally to command of a group of the new and greatly improved war-built escort vessels.'
