From the cover: “The reader will be able to see from this collection of photographs relating to Malmesbury that during the latter half of the nineteenth century, many businesses were started, schools opened, and the railway came to the town. It really was a progressive age. In 1875, Malmesbury had 240 commercial business enterprises, including three breweries and 23 public houses.
There are now no breweries, many public houses have closed, and the majority of the old family firms have gone for ever. Not only have the names disappeared from the scene, but often the property has been demolished.”
