From the author’s preface: “In this book I set out to find how courage is born and how it is sustained in a modern army of a free people. The soldier is alone in his war with terror and we have to recognise the first signs of his defeat so that we may come in time to his rescue. So the first part describes the discovery of fear. The second tells how courage is spent in war. In the third part of the book — The Care and Management of Fear — I tell what can be done to delay or prevent this using up of courage.”
