Wistart Wedge had inherited the Jericho Clarion from his late mother, but with it unfortunately, none of her business acumen or strength of character. Where Wistart was weak, his wife Mary Agnes was strong. She had nothing but scorn for her husband, and spent most of her time sojourning in the livlier spots of the globe. When Wistart's paper all but folded, Mary Agnes came back to Jericho, not for Wistart but to protect herself from a man who had once persuaded her to pose nude, and who was now in Jericho with the painting.
