Although long under a cloud for political reasons, Louis-Ferdinand Celine (1894 - 1961) is now regarded with increasing respect as a major contributor to french literature of the twentieth century. His difficult style and grotesque vision, which caused a sensation in Paris when his works were first published, have left him largely inaccessible to the English reader. The author has overcome this problem by quoting extensively from the works in French and by providing, immediately after each quotation, a literal translation. There is also a detailed discussion of Celine's political attitudes during the period 1937-45.
