Paul Gregson is a traveller in expensive fireplaces, who wants to move his family out of London to the seaside town where his firm's office is located. But Grace manages the little café below their flat. This café is popular with the workers of a small nearby factory, and she runs it on the lines of a works canteen. She feels this is a service she can render to the new society which is growing up, but Paul regards it as a waste of her talents.Pat, their sixteen-year-old daughter, watches this stress between her two parents. The stress deepens as Paul's love for his home declines and he becomes interested in a decorative young woman who is secretary to his chief. What happens in the end has a dramatic effect on the lives of all the main characters.
