Dictionary of Ceramics by Arthur Dodd; David Murfin; (£30.00)Publisher: The Institute of Materials — 1994Binding: Hardback First Edition. [ISBN: 0901716561]Condition: Very Good. Slightly bruised at the top corners. Boards slightly dustyDescription: From the preface: “The dictionary has been considerably expanded to take account of new developments in engineering ceramics, electroceramics; of new processes in whitewares; of new machinery and new test methods; of the impact of environmental legislation. The same broad scope has been adopted and coverage of glass, vitreous enamel and cement industries widened. It has seemed wise, in an industry which has moved much further to being science-based rather than craft-based, to include some terminology in relevant areas of basic science — in particular crystal structure, fracture mechanics and sintering. Here, and for some advanced ceramics produced in a wide variety of forms, some longer entries have been introduced to avoid extensive use of cross-references and to provide a coherent understanding of closely-related materials and processes.”Notes: Size: 10" x 7". Dog Training and Behaviour by Geoff Grinham (£16.50)Publisher: The Crowood Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852237511]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight ruffling at the top edge of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The basis of all successful dog training must be an understanding of canine psychology and behaviour. In this book this vast and frequently misunderstood subject is tackled in a clear and accessible way, enabling anyone to grasp the essentials and use them to lay the foundations for a long-lasting, mutually satisfactory human/canine partnership.

The critical development periods of the puppy and the adolescent dog, establishment of rank order, canine language and communication, and the variables of temperament and disposition are explored before the author sets out in detail a comprehensive, easy-to-follow training programme. Working logically and progressively through each stage of the dog’s learning process, the handler is shown how to teach and consolidate each lesson, from the basics of Sit, Heel and Come, to the more advanced Search and Scent Discrimination exercises. Finally there are chapters dealing with individual behavioural problems, which explain how it is possible to retrain the errant dog and prevent future regression. Throughout, the practical day-to-day relevance of the various training exercises is emphasized, and the process by which mutual trust and understanding are achieved is made clear. Thus the book is more than a training manual; it is a complete guide to getting the most out of your partnership with your dog.

Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and original line-drawings, Dog Training and Behaviour is both a practical step-by-step guidebook and a valuable source of reference for all dog owners.”

Scientific Principles of Feeding Farm Live Stock: Proceedings of A Conference Held At Brighton, 11-13 November 1958 by Anon. (£16.50)Publisher: Farmer & Stock-Breeder Publications — 1959Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight fraying at the spine ends and corners, fading to the spine. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Spotting to the blanks and pastedowns. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “This book provides the most up-to-date information that is available about the principles of feeding farm live stock. It will be of value as a standard reference book not only to research workers but to advisers and students.

After the Second World War the need for increased production of animal products, the development of agricultural chemistry and the growth of the feeding stuffs industry led to greater use of balanced rations for live stock. The proper balancing of these rations calls for a sound basis on which to’ evaluate and state the nutritional requirements of live stock, but most of the existing standards are based on research carried out half a century ago.

The principles of feeding farm live stock have lately been under review, and newer ideas have been put forward by research workers in different countries. Farmer & Stock-Breeder recently got the advisers, national and commercial, to talk over these matters with research workers and see whether any restatement of principles might be helpful to all concerned. The conference called for this purpose produced not only the many valuable papers in this book but the considerable amount of constructive discussion and suggestions recorded here.”

The Complete Art of Printing and Enlarging by Dr. O. R. Croy (£10.00)Publisher: Focal Press — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0240447557]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a stain to the foot of the reverse and minor splits at the lower corners.Description: 15th Impression, 3rd Edition. [First Edition: 1950] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “THIS IS THE FIFTEENTH PRINTING of O. R. Croy’s most popular book — which is in its third edition and something of a classic in many languages.

There have been few photographers blessed with such unusual gifts, who have amassed so much varied experience as O. R. Croy did, before he died in 1977.

As the son of a painter he grew up with an artist’s tools. At university he read photographic chemistry to become first a research worker and then a teacher in his own right. Yet somehow this still left him with time for his hobby, conjuring.

His interest in art, his scientific training, his ability to teach and his skilful hands made him a very exceptional sort of photographer. He continuously broke new ground both by using the camera as a tool for serving science and by creating unusual pictures just for the fun of it. His macro-photographic illustrations of natural history and his pictorial jokes in American and Continental magazines thrust into many fields and established new techniques.

Of his books on photography this one is the most methodical and detailed in covering that decisive last phase of photographic work — the finished print — which in the end speaks for every photographer, amateur and professional, beginner and advanced alike.

On how to make prints — ordinary prints and elaborately controlled prints, straightforward prints and very tricky prints—there is such a wealth of technical knowledge and personal experience that you will be unlikely to find it between the covers of any other single volume.

It is like an encyclopaedic cookery book — you can follow its recipes without ever having tried your hand at them before and you will find new ideas, novel methods and exciting possibilities suggested by them, however wide your own experience may be.

And how matter of fact, easily understood and readable it all is! Croy had the gift of really good teachers of never using more words than necessary and never forgetting any that matter. There is a message and a lesson in every sentence he writes. And there is practical evidence in every picture he shows.

A glance at his photographs and his diagrams is the best proof that he knows what he is talking about. They are all his own in this book.”

Preston Cloud begins with the atom, the smallest known world out of which all other worlds are made. From the behaviour of protons, neutrons, and their satellite electrons, he turns to the behaviour of galaxies and the birth and death of stars, focusing on the life cycle of our solar system and our own small planet. Cloud describes the stages by which Earth, its atmosphere, and its oceans slowly became inhabitable by primitive, then more complex, forms of life. In considerable detail he explains the controversial chemistry by which life may have first been born into an inanimate universe. Tracing the evolution of plants and animals, Cloud demonstrates how the relatively recent development of a genus of primate mammals that calls itself Homo sapiens could have a disastrous effect on the planet. In a provocative final chapter, Cloud places mankind within the framework of this evolving global habitat and proposes a program for the survival of the human race.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". It is also widely used as an analytical tool in structural studies of large molecules. This introduction to the subject, suitable for honours students of chemistry and physics, is limited to the principal features of each type of spectroscopy in the hope of giving the student a unified picture of the whole subject. It is assumed that the reader will have an elementary knowledge of quantum theory. The Teeth of the Tiger by Tom Clancy (£8.50)Publisher: Michael Joseph — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071814502X]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “A man named Mohammed sits in a cafe in Vienna, about to propose a deal to a Colombian. Mohammed has a strong network of agents and sympathizers throughout Europe and the Middle East, and the Colombian has an equally strong drug network throughout America. What if they were to form an alliance, to combine all their assets and connections? The potential for profits would be enormous -and the potential for destruction unimaginable.

In the brave new world of terrorism — where anybody with a spare AK-47, a knowledge of kitchen chemistry or simply the will to die can become a player — the old rules no longer apply. No matter what new governmental organizations come into being, the only truly effective ones are those that are quick and agile, free of oversight and restrictions … and are outside the system. Way outside the system.

In a nondescript office building in suburban Maryland, the firm Hendly Associates does a profitable business in stocks, bonds and international currencies, but its true mission is quite different: to identify and locate terrorist threats, and then deal with them, in whatever manner necessary. Established with the knowledge of President John Patrick Ryan, ‘the campus’ is always on the lookout for promising new talent, its recruiters scattered throughout the armed forces and government agencies — and three men are about to cross its radar.

The first is Dominic Caruso, a rookie FBI agent barely a year out of Quantico, whose decisive actions resolve a particularly brutal kidnap/murder case. The second is Caruso’s brother, Brian, a Marine captain just back from his first combat in Afghanistan, and already a man to watch. And the third is their cousin… a young man named Jack Ryan. Jr.”

A Simple Guide To Modern Valency Theory by George Ingham Brown (£6.50)Publisher: Longmans, Green & Co. — 1953Binding: Hardback Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Ex-library with usual marks. Fraying at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “THIS book is intended to bridge the gap which the author believes to exist between the treatment of valency given in standard text-books of chemistry and that given in the more advanced works devoted entirely to valency. It is intended for use by advanced sixth form pupils, by first-year university students, and by older chemists who are interested in modern developments but who may not have the time or inclination to study the more advanced works. The treatment of the material is simple, concise, and mainly qualitative; mathematical considerations and experimental details have been reduced to a minimum. The aim has been to give a general account of modern valency theory which can be easily and readily grasped, and which will, it is hoped, help towards a fuller understanding of chemistry as a whole.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by L. An acceptable reading copy with clear signs of previous ownership and shelf wear.Description: BLOOD is to the human body what soil is to the plant. It is common knowledge that poor, exhausted soil will produce only weak, sickly plants. In the same way, poor blood, lacking in essential constituents, will produce weak, sickly bodies, prone to disease. By enriching the soil, the ill-conditioned plant can be made to recover and flourish. The recovery of the ailing human body can best be achieved by a similar, process-by restoring to the blood the constituents in which it is lacking. This is Biochemistry - The Chemistry of Living Tissue. Notes: Size: A Format (7" x 4½").

Green Medicine: The Search for Plants that Heal by Margaret B. Kreig (£6.50)Publisher: George G. Harrap & Co. — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a coffee ring to the upper panel, fraying at the spine ends and corners and further creases elsewhere. Price Clipped. Top edge of the text block tanned. Offset to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In recent years there has been a distinct revival of scientific interest in medicinal plants as opposed to synthetics. Mrs Kreig, an experienced American science writer, stumbled almost by accident on the exciting work connected with ‘green medicine’. She became so interested that she decided to devote her full time to collecting material for a book. Her research took four years and caused her to travel 70,000 miles in actual field work.

Green Medicine focuses on the investigations of the vegetable kingdom for new sources of botanical drugs — a combination of field work and laboratory research. The reader is first introduced to the plant hunters who roam the world for their specimens. Some of them spend many months of patient detective work in locating and then studying a particular plant or species.

We learn that quite a large part of modern research is given to a re-examination of folk medicine and to the drugs used by native witchdoctors. Ancient literature is being re-read and old herbarium sheets scrutinized for facts and ideas. Already a start has been made on marine pharmacology — drugs from the sea. The author has a happy knack of linking the past with the present in showing how modern techniques are discovering new and better uses for some of the old-time drugs. As examples, one can quote the use of periwinkle for combating childhood leukaemia; Mexican yam for the treatment of arthritis; deadly arrow poison as a muscle relaxant; and snakeroot, an ancient Hindu remedy, for cases of insanity.

In this endlessly absorbing book — it was on the best-seller lists in the U.S.A. — readers can share the excitement of man’s centuries-long hunt for plants that heal.”

Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Toning to the blanks. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the introduction: “IN the eighteenth century animate and inanimate objects were also described as organic (possessing organs) and inorganic. When chemistry had advanced to a stage in which analyses of substances more complex than simple salts and minerals were made, it was found that there were many compounds that occurred in both animate and inanimate objects. In addition, there were compounds that appeared to be restricted in occurrence to living organisms. These compounds had in common the property of containing carbon. Since they were restricted to organic nature their study became known as organic chemistry, a term later broadened to include the study of all carbon compounds, including those synthesised in the laboratory. For some time it was held that organic compounds were not subject to the same laws as those governing the behaviour of inorganic compounds (« Dans la nature vivante, les elementes paraissent obeir a des lois tout autres que dans la nature inorganique », Berzelius, 1849)1. Though there exists a flourishing legend that this supposition was demolished by Wohler’s synthesis of urea in 18282, it was not until the publication of Berthelot’s « Chimie organique fondee sur la Synthese » in 1860 that it was generally rejected. In spite of the rejection of the idea that chemical substances found in the living organism are not subject to the laws applying to inorganic materials, it has lingered long in the field of protein chemistry.

Most living organisms are mainly inorganic in composition. Though quantitatively important, the inorganic components are overshadowed both in complexity and variety by the organic components. Quantitatively, the most important groups of organic compounds are the proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. A recent analysis of a human body showed that inorganic constituents amounted to about 73 % of its weight (of which about 68 % was water), while about 13% was protein, about 12% fat, and about 1% carbohydrate.”

Radiations And Living Cells: An Introduction to Radiation Biology, in Which the Action of Penetrating Radiations on the Living Cell Is Described, With Special Reference to the Effect on Cell Division in Human Tissues by F. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heaving fading at the spine and many small nicks and chips, heavy creasing and some loss to the head of the lower panel. Price Clipped. Spine of the book faded, as are the margins of both the boards. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the cover: “This book is a first attempt to give, from the experimental angle, a concise account of the effect of penetrating radiation on normal and diseased tissues in man. It is written for those who are interested in the ever widening frontier between physics and biology, particularly that part of the frontier concerned with medical physics and radiation biology. It collects information at present widely scattered over specialist literature, much of which is not easily accessible to the ordinary reader.

Each section of the book begins with a short description of an unirradiated tissue for comparison with the changes brought about by exposure to penetrating rays. In simple language, it gives some account of what is known about the effects of penetrating radiation on the cells composing human tissues, of how information of this kind of biological reaction is being acquired and a few of the experimental methods that are in use for increasing knowledge in this field of science.”

The first chapter gives a broad introduction and background to the subject, and the second chapter covers stable isotopes. Chapters 3 to 9 comprise what is generally regarded as'radiochemistry'. Chapters 10 to 17 offer a course in nuclear reaction chemistry. Chapter 18 deals with biological radiation effects for the chemist. The last four chapters give a guide to nuclear energy: energy production, fuel cycle, waste management, the largest applied field of nuclear chemistry. Over 200 exercises, with model answers, remain largely unchanged from the first edition, so teachers working from the earlier text should find only advantages in switching to this new restructured coursebook on all aspects of nuclear chemistry. 'The book fully meets the authors objectives, it is well written in a logical, objective, thought-provoking and quite easily readable style. It should appeal to the serious student of radio- and nuclearchemistry at either undergraduate or postgraduate level, as well as to readers with a more general interest in nuclear science and its impact on the environment.'..
